Happy Chinese New Year!

Efter att nu ha ätit nyårsmiddag tillsammans med vår familj här i Penang, är jag nu så mätt att jag knappt kan stå upp. Det är mycket vanligt här i Malaysia att man äter Hot pot på nyårsafton vilket innebär att man tillsammans vid köksbordet lagar råvarorna i en stor gryta med kokande soppa. Fisk, skaldjur, bläckfisk, sallad, minimajs, köttbullar, och svamp är bara några utav de råvaror som vi åt i kvällens hot pot...mums!

Det är nu knappt 3 timmar kvar tills det kinesiska nyåret och även då det inte direkt är tradition att avlägga några nyårslöften inför det kinesiska nyåret tänkte jag ändå lägga ut en bild på ett citat jag hittade i ett kafe i Georgetown häromdagen. Många människor lever idag sina liv väldigt hektiskt och ofta i strävan efter att tjäna mer pengar. Kanske skulle vi alla må lite bättre och känna oss mer tillfreds med det vi har om vi ibland stannade upp och försökte leva efter mottot som på bilden nedan. Vad vet jag?! I vilket fall som helst, gott nytt kinesiskt nyår på er alla!     

We just had a big New Year dinner with our family here in Penang, and I'm so full that I can barely stand up. It is very common here in Malaysia to eat hot pot on New Year's Eve, which means that everyone cooks the ingredients together at the kitchen table in a large pot of boiling soup. Fish, prawns, cuttlefish , lettuce , baby corn, meatballs, and mushrooms are just some of ingredients we had in this New Year's Eve hot pot ... yummy!!

It is now less than 3 hours to go before the Chinese New Year is here and even though it's not exactly tradition to make New Year's resolutions before the Chinese New Year, I just wanted  to post a photo of a quote I found in a cafe in Georgetown the other day. Many people today live their lives so hectic and often with the purpose to earn more money. Maybe we should all feel a bit healthier and happier with what we have if we sometimes just paused our lives a bit and tried to live by this motto shown in the photo below. Who knows?! Anyway, Happy Chinese New Year to you all and hope you're having a great one no matter where you are!

Chinese New Year

Det är hektiska dagar här i Penang just nu. Det kinesiska nyåret närmar sig och firandet av det är stort här i Penang. Det kinesiska nyåret kallas även för vårfestivalen och symboliserar väntan på våren och årets blomning. Eftersom nyåret följer den kinesiska månkalendern, infaller nyåret i år den 31 januari och innebär en övergång från ormens år till hästens år. Det kinesiska nyåret har firats i över 4000 år och det finns många legender om varför och hur det har firats genom historien. Idag är det kinesiska nyåret framförallt en högtid som firar familjens sammankomst och hedrandet av förfäderna. Hur nyåret firas ser olika ut beroende på land, etnicitet och familj. Här i Penang är det vanligt att man dekorerar sina hem med många röda detaljer så som tyger, lyktor, körsbärsblommor och kinesiska tecken som oftast symboliserar välstånd och lycka. Familjer firar helst genom att återförenas på nyårsafton för en gemensam middag och fortsätter firandet på nyårsdagen med att träffa släkt och vänner. Röda paket med pengar är en vanlig förekomst och delas främst ut av de som är gifta till de som är ogifta. Eftersom jag och min man numera är gifta, är det vi som delar ut röda paket till de som är yngre än oss och som fortfarande är ogifta. Vid det kinesiska nyåret är det även vanligt att man som buddhist går till templet och tänder rökelse, framförallt om det nya året inte är så gynnsamt för det kinesiska stjärntecken som man är född i. Nästa år är mindre gynnsamt för de som är födda i hästens, råttans, kaninens och tuppens år. Lyckligtvis är jag född i hundens år och verkar ha ett bra år att se fram emot vilket jag kan behöva då jag ska starta mitt eget företag. Men det skadar ju inte att tända lite rökelse i templet ändå för att vara på den säkra sidan!    


It's been busy days here in Penang for the moment. The Chinese New Year is approaching and the celebration of the festival is big here in Penang. The Chinese New Year is also called Spring Festival and symbolizes the anticipation of spring and its' blossoming. As the New Year follows the Chinese lunar calendar, this years' New Year, falls on 31 of January and represents a shift from the year of the snake to the year of the horse. The Chinese New Year has been celebrated for more than 4000 years and there are many legends about why and how it has been celebrated throughout the history. Today, Chinese New Year is especially a festival that celebrates the family reunion and the honoring of the ancestors. How the Chinese New Year is celebrated varies depending on country, ethnicity , and family. Here in Penang as in many other places, it is customary to decorate the home with a lot of red decorations such as fabrics, lanterns, cherry flowers and Chinese characters that usually symbolizes prosperity and happiness. Families often celebrate the New Years Eve with a reunion dinner which follows with the celebration on New Year's Day by visiting relatives and friends. Red packets with money are a common thing and is given mainly by those who are married to those who are unmarried. Since my husband and I are now married , we will be giving red packets to those who are younger than us, an still unmarried. During Chinese New Year, it is also common for the Buddhists to go to the temple and light incense, especially if the coming New Year is not favorable to the Chinese zodiac sign that you were born in. Next year is less favorable for those born in the year of the horse, rat, rabbit and rooster. Fortunately, I was born in the year of the dog and I seem to have a good year to look forward to. Lucky me, since this coming year is the year when I will open up my own business. But I guess it doesn't hurt to light some incense in the temple anyway, just to be on the safe side I mean..

Swedish music

Sverige är ju ett otroligt rikt musikland med många internationellt kända musiker och producenter/låtskrivare. Ibland blir till och med jag förvånad när jag lyssnar på radion här i Malaysia och fastnar för någon ny låt, som i slutändan ofta visar sig antingen vara en svensk produktion eller en svensk artist. Lite stolt blir jag ju faktiskt över alla duktiga artister i Sverige som har en så ledande men även unik stil vad gäller konst och musik. Jag tror att för oss svenskar så är musik en sådan självklarhet och om man tänker efter så finns musiken verkligen överallt i det svenska samhället. Jag har nog till exempel aldrig varit i ett land där man har så mycket olika musikprogram på tv som i Sverige. Vi har även våra kommunala musikskolor där jag tror att de flesta barn någon gång provat på något instrument. Jag spelade själv piano i några år, vilket jag tyvärr slutade med när jag kom upp i tonåren och upptäckte att det fanns andra spännande saker i livet att ägna sig åt. Och har man inte spelat något instrument som yngre så kanske man har varit med och sjungit i en av de många körer som finns i varje stad i Sverige. Oavsett vilken relation man än har till musik så tror jag att de flesta av oss skulle vara eniga om att musik är något viktigt och betydelsefullt för oss människor. Därför kommer musiken vara en viktig del i mitt kafe och eftersom det är ett svensk kafe så kommer självklart all musik som spelas ha en svensk anknytning. Nedan har jag publicerat några länkar som handlar om svensk musik och oavsett var i världen ni bor, har ni kanske hört talas om några av de artister och låtar som nämns. De artister som spelas på radio i Malaysia just nu är framförallt Icona Pop, Avicii, Swedish House Maffia och Robyn. I mitt kafe kommer det bli många fler artister från olika genrer att upptäcka, även sådana som enbart sjunger på svenska såklart.

   
Sweden is an incredibly rich country in terms of music, with many internationally renowned musicians and producers / songwriters. Sometimes, even I'm amazed when I listen to the radio here in Malaysia and get hooked on a new song , which in the end often prove to be either a Swedish production or a song sang by a Swedish artist. I can't help but to be a bit proud of all the talented artists in Sweden that has such a leading but also unique style in terms of art and music. I think that music for us Swedes is such a matter of course and if you think about it, music truly exist everywhere in the Swedish society. For an example, I don't think I've ever been in a country where there are so many different music programs on television as in Sweden. We also have our local music schools where I think most children have tried an instrument or two. I myself, played the piano for a few years which I unfortunately stopped doing when I became a teenager and discovered that there were other exciting things in life to do than to play piano. And if you as a Swede haven't played any instrument, then maybe you 've been singing in one of the many choirs that exist in every city in Sweden. No matter your relationship with music, I think most of us would agree that music is something very important and significant for us humans. And because of this, the music will be an important part of my cafe here in Penang and since it is a Swedish cafe, all the music played will have some sort of Swedish connection. Below you can find some further links and info about Swedish music and no matter where in the world you live, you will probably have heard of or recognize some of the artists and songs mentioned in the links. The Swedish artists played on the radio in Malaysia right now is primarily Icona Pop, Avicii, Swedish House Mafia and Robyn. In my Cafè there will be many more artists from different genres to discover, and of course also those artists who only sings in Swedish.

Art is rubbish is art

I helgen var det premiär för en konstutställning  i Georgetown med titeln "art is rubbish is art". Utställningen är en soloutställning av konstnären Ernest Zacharevic från Litauen som blivit känd här i Penang genom sina väggmålningar (murals) i Georgetown. Han har hittills gjort sex väggmålningar i staden vilka alla blivit väldigt uppskattade av såväl turister som lokalbor. I fredags var det då dags för hans egna utställning, belägen i en övergiven Art Deco byggnad från 1940-talet, där han skapat konst genom att använda sig av "skräp". Där fanns till exempel oljemålningar som målats på gamla kaffesäckar, tavlor med motiv gjorda utav gamla häftstift samt målningar gjorda på gamla skåp och trädörrar. Utställningen var väldigt imponerande och den gamla Art Deco byggnaden passade perfekt som konsthall för utställningen. Väl värt ett besök om man befinner sig i Penang!


Last weekend was the opening of an art exhibition in Georgetown titled "Art is rubbish is art." The exhibition is a solo art exhibition by the artist Ernest Zacharevic from Lithuania who became famous here in Penang through his murals in Georgetown. He has made six murals in the city so far, and all of them has been very appreciated by both tourists and locals. Last Friday, it was time for his own exhibition located in an abandoned Art Deco building from the 1940s, where he has been creating art from old "rubbish". There were, for example, oil paintings painted on old coffee bags, paintings with prints made ​​out of old thumbtacks and paintings made on old cabinets and wooden doors. The exhibition was very impressive and the old Art Deco building is perfectly suited as an art gallery. This exhibition is well worth a visit if you are in Penang!

New bicycles

Nu har vi äntligen köpt egna cyklar och titta så fina de är! Idag har vi varit ute och cyklat runt Georgetown hela dagen i solen och värmen, så nu är vi helt slut. Vi tog dock massa sköna och lata pauser inklusive lunch på den indiska restaurangen Kapitan och en god illy kaffe på Muntri 47. Efter vår cykeltur åkte vi hem för att laga lite pasta men då tog gasen i spisen slut och vi hade ingen eld att laga mat på så det fick bli att åka till den lokala food courten och äta lite Tomyam fried rice och diverse goda nudelrätter. Med andra ord, en helt underbar söndag i Penang!        



We've finally bought our own bikes and look how nice they are! Today we've been out the whole day cycling around in Georgetown under the hot sun, so now we are completely exhausted. We did, however, enjoy a lot of nice and lazy breaks in between including lunch at the Indian restaurant Kapitan and a good illy coffee at Muntri 47. After our long bike ride in Georgetown, we went home to cook some pasta but then we ran out of gas in the stove and so we had to continue our lazy day with a visit to the local food court and eat some Tomyam fried rice and assorted good noodle dishes. In other words, a wonderful Penang Sunday!

Cycling in Georgetown

Det har blivit väldigt populärt att cykla i Georgetown och på söndagarna stänger kommunen av en utav gatorna (Lebuh Pantai) från all biltrafik för att göra det lite säkrare och för att få ännu fler människor att börja cykla i staden. Eftersom det är mycket biltrafik på de trånga små gatorna, har många hittills varit lite rädda för att cykla mitt i bland den tunga trafiken. Men för varje vecka som går verkar cyklisterna bara öka i staden och cykeluthyrningsställen ploppar upp lite var stans. Min man och jag har planer på att köpa egna cyklar eftersom cykling är något som vi verkligen saknar från när vi bodde i Sverige. Där behövde vi aldrig köpa någon bil utan cyklade vart än vi skulle. Vår förhoppning är att kommunen här så småningom ska göra om flera av gatorna till gång- och cykelgator men för att detta ska ske måste ju fler människor ansluta sig till gruppen cyklister. Att köpa cyklar och cykla runt i Georgetown, är vårt sätt att bidra till denna förändring av staden. Efterom gatorna på vissa ställen är trånga, tänkte vi investera i ett par mindre cyklar som är lätta att ta sig runt på samt frakta in och ut ur vårt hus. Vi vill även ha möjlighet att kunna ta med oss cyklarna upp på Penang Hill och till den Botaniska trädgården, så en liten cykel som är ihopfällbar vore optimalt. Jag har aldrig cyklat på annat än vanliga gamla damcyklar förut och visste inte om det skulle kännas ostadigt med en mindre cykel. Så i söndags gjorde vi som alla andra turister i staden, gick och hyrde oss ett par mindre, ihopfällbara cyklar för att prova och se om detta vore något för oss. Som tur var kändes cyklarna inte ett dugg ostadiga utan kändes väldigt lätta att manövrera sig fram på bland de trånga gatorna. Himla roligt var det också att cykla genom staden! Det kändes som att man såg allt från ett annat perspektiv och kunde uppskatta staden och byggnaderna mycket mer än när man kör igenom där med bil. Mycket solskyddsfaktor är dock ett hett tips om man inte vill bränna upp sig! Men det blir absolut att investera i ett par cyklar inom snar framtid. Förhoppningsvis kan vi lyckas få tag i ett par begagnade cyklar så att påverkan på miljön blir ännu mindre.    


It has become very popular to cycle in Georgetown and every Sunday the council closes one of the streets (Lebuh Pantai) from car traffic to make it a little safer and to make more people cycle in the city. Since it is a lot of traffic on the narrow little streets, many people have so far been too scared to ride bikes amongst the heavy traffic. But every passing week seems to attract more and more cyclists in the city and bike rental shops are popping up everywhere around the city. My husband and I are planning to buy our own bikes because cycling is something we really miss from when we lived in Sweden. In Sweden, we never had to buy a car since it is so easy and convenient to ride a bike there. Our hope is that the council here in Georgetown eventually will turn several of the streets into pedestrian and bicycle streets but more people need to join the group of cyclists for this to happen. Buying bikes and cycling around in Georgetown, is our way of contributing to this change in the city. Furthermore, since the streets in some places are very narrow, we thought of investing in smaller bikes that are easy to get around with and easy to carry in and out of our house. We also want to be able to bring the bikes with us up to Penang Hill and the Botanical Gardens, so a small bike that is foldable would be optimal . I've never cycled on anything other than plain old ladies bikes before and didn't know if it would feel unstable with a smaller bike. And so, last Sunday we did like many other tourists in the city, we went and rented some smaller, foldable bicycles to try out and see if this would be something for us. Luckily, the bikes didn't feel unsteady at all but felt very easy to maneuver through the narrow streets. It was also great fun to ride the bikes through the city! It felt like you could see everything from a different perspective and could appreciate the city and the buildings much more than when you drive through there by car. However, a lot of sunblock is recommended if you don't want to get burned too badly from the strong sunlight! We will definitely invest in a couple of bikes in the near future. Hopefully we can manage to get hold of some second hand bikes so that the impact on the environment will be minimum.

  

Scandinavian design

Tydligen är det väldigt trendigt med skandinavisk design i Singapore just nu. Skulle köpa en inredningstidning häromdagen för att få lite inspiration till mitt kafe och fick tag på en tidning med ett nummer dedikerat till skandinavisk inredning och design. Det är alltid roligt att läsa om skandinavisk design från ett utifrånperspektiv. Man upptäcker alltid nya saker och ser det med andra ögon då någon som inte växt upp med det, skriver om det. Skandinavisk design är ju utvecklat utefter miljön och kulturen som finns i skandinavien och som funkar där. Men i Sverige tror jag inte så många tänker på varför vi gillar vissa färger, former och mönster. Vi bara gör helt enkelt. Tex. så berättade min man häromdagen om vad han tror är anledningen till varför vi i Sverige gillar motiv som Marimekko, som för många andra människor skulle uppfattas som barnsliga och som något som hör hemma i ett barnrum. Min man menar på att vi gillar detta eftersom vi i vårt samhälle inte har någon hierarki mellan vuxna och barn. I Sverige skiljer vi inte så mycket på vuxna och barn utan ser det mer som att en vuxen är en stor människa och ett barn är en liten människa, med exakt samma rättigheter i samhället. Den stora människan är inte högre i hierarkin än den lilla människan utan samexisterar i samhället, sida vid sida. Vad den lilla människan tänker, tycker och känner är lika viktigt som vad den stora människan tänker, tycker och känner. Därför menar min man att motiven i Sverige blir mer flytande och att vissa motiv som i andra kulturer enbart skulle höra hemma i ett barnrum, passar lika bra i ett vardagsrum i Sverige då detta är ett rum både för stora och små människor. Han menar även på att svenskar uppskattar denna typen av motiv för att fokuset i samhället är att ha roligt och njuta av livet. Man kan säga att vi ser det som något positivt i Sverige att bejaka barnet inom oss. Som sagt, detta är en teori om svenskarna från ett Malaysiskt perspektiv. Vi får se om ni håller med? Nedan finns ett exempel på det Marimekkomotiv som var med i tidningen jag köpte.

Tack vare tidningen kom jag fram till det konceptet som jag vill ha för mitt kafe här i Georgetown. Jag hade nog först tänkt mig att hålla det lite mer lantligt ala Ölandskafe men har nu bestämt mig för en lite mer industriel touch på det hela med lite mer moderna inslag men ändå med en bas av återanvända material. Eftersom Asien är "the land of copying" kan jag inte avslöja mer än så med risk för att andra ska kopiera det som jag vill göra. Jag vill ju trots allt att mitt kafe ska vara något unikt! Så det blir att ge sig till tåls tills kafeet har öppnat. Ser verkligen fram emot nu att få börja inreda!  



Apparently it is very trendy with Scandinavian design in Singapore right now. I wanted to buy an interior design magazine the other day to get some inspiration for my cafe and got hold of a magazine with an issue dedicated to Scandinavian interior and design. It's always fun to read about Scandinavian design from an outside perspective. You always discover new things and see it with different eyes when someone who didn't grow up with it, writes about it . Scandinavian design is developed in a certain environment and culture in the Northern part of the world, and in a way that is suitable for a life there. But I don't think that many people in Sweden think of why we like certain colors , shapes and designs. We just simply do. For example, my husband told me the other day about what he believes is the reason why people in Sweden like prints such as Marimekko, which for many people may be perceived as childish and as something that belongs in a children's room. My husband says that Swedes like this because in our society, we don't have hierarchy between adults and children. In Sweden we do not distinguish so much between adults and children but instead view adults as a big humans and children as small humans, and with the same rights in society. The big humans are not higher in the hierarchy than the little humans, but are instead coexisting in the society, side by side. What the little human thinks and feels is as important as what the big human thinks and feels. And this is the reason according to my husband, why the prints in Sweden becomes more fluid and why some prints that in other cultures would be seen as belonging in a children's room, looks just as good in a living room in Sweden. Because the living room in Sweden is a place for both big humans and small humans. He also thinks that Swedes appreciate this type of prints since the focus in the society is to have fun and enjoy life. One can say that we see it as something positive in Sweden to affirm the child within us. And so, this is a theory of the Swedes from a Malaysian perspective. Let's see if you agree with it? Below is an example of the Marimekko print that were featured in the magazine that I bought the other day.

Thanks to the magazine, I also came to realize the concept that I want for my cafe here in Georgetown. I first imagined it to be a bit rustic like a lot of the cafes look like on the Swedish island Öland, but I have now decided a more industrial touch to it with more modern elements but still with a base of recycled materials. Since Asia is " the land of copying " I can't reveal more than that, with the risk of others copying what I want to do. After all, I want my cafe to be something unique! So everyone just have to be patient until the cafe is opened. I'm really looking forward now to get started with the interior!  

World heritage site

Georgetown blev i july 2008 utsedd av UNESCO till en världsarvsstad. Titeln delar Georgetown med den sydligare staden Melaka som, liksom Georgetown, har ett rikt kulturarv. Att Georgetown fått denna utmärkelse betyder mycket för bevarandet av de gamla byggnaderna och det rika kulturlivet. Tack vare titeln är det många som investerar i staden, för att återigen bygga upp det som i många år stått och förfallit. Det finns givetvis många åsikter om denna investering och om hur uppbyggnaden av staden ser ut idag. EN del tycker att man enbart ska konservera staden exakt så som den tidigare sett ut och inte ge staden några moderna inslag som förut inte fanns. Detta kan till exempel gälla installationen av en tvättmaskin i husen, vilket inte fanns förr i tiden. Andra tycker att man ska få göra om husen som man själv vill och renovera samt använda husen till det man själv önskar men även kan tjäna pengar på. Själv står jag lite mittemellan dessa åsikter. Jag tycker att man ska renovera husen enligt de riktlinjer som finns och försöka återställa husen till dess tidigare glansdagar. Däremot tycker jag inte att enbart konservering av husen utan minsta moderniteter från idag ger en rättvis bild av husens storhet. Om man bara konserverar finns det en risk att husen bara blir som museum utan liv och att människorna så småningom försvinner därifrån. Men om man får fria händer att renovera hur som helst kommer husens karaktär och ursprung, helt att försvinna. Jag tycker det optimala vore att renovera husen till vad de en gång var men att samtidigt göra husen aktuella för affärsverksamheter och livsstilar som man idag har i det moderna samhället. För även om det känns lite krasst att det oftast är pengar och kapital som ska få styra så kan man inte förneka att ett ökat värde av husen och en mer flexibel användning av dem, ökar chansen för att husen kommer att få stå kvar där i många århundranden till. Ett exempel på detta i Sverige är gamla stan i Stockholm. Detta är en gammal stadsdel som har en historia ända tillbaka till 1200-talet. Idag är husen renoverade i mycket gott skick och det är den delen av Stockholm som lockar flest turister. Det är även ett område som många drömmer om att få bo i men som få människor faktiskt har råd till. I de nedre lokalerna av husen finns många restauranger, butiker och kafeer vilket ger staden dess puls och gör den attraktiv för såväl svenskar som turister. Om dessa hus och lokaler enbart skulle få användas enligt 1200-talets affärsverksamheter och användningsområden så tror jag att staden skulle ligga ganska öde idag. Jag menar, ingen vill väl bo i gamla stan utan toaletter och kasta sin avföring ner på gatorna som man gjorde då. Inte heller vill människor som investerar sin själ i husen i Georgetown inte kunna ha möjlighet att tvätta sina kläder i en tvättmaskin. 

Därför tror jag att samtidigt som det är av stor vikt att bevara arvet från historien i Georgetown, även är viktigt att inte förneka att tiderna förändras och acceptera att inte allt som är modernt är av ondo, uta kanske helt enkelt det som gör att det gamla överlever.

In july 2008, Georgetown was appointed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The title is shared with the southern city of Melaka which, as well as Georgetown, has a rich cultural and structural heritage. The receiving of this title has meant a lot to the preservation of the old buildings and the rich cultural life in Georgetown. Thanks to the title, many people are investing in the city to once again rebuild what has been neglected for many years. Naturally, there are many opinions about this investment and how the reconstruction of the city looks like today. Some people think that the city simply must be preserved exactly as it previously looked like and not give the town any contemporary features that did not exist in the past. This for example may be the installation of washing machines in the houses, which of course, didn't exist in the past. Others believe that one should be allowed to do whatever changes of the houses that they would want to or renovate and use the houses as they see fits their purpose or business agenda. For me, my standpoint is  a bit in between these views. I think that you should renovate the houses according to the guidelines that are given and try to restore the buildings to their former glory. However , I feel that only conservation of the houses without the slightest modernities from today doesn't give a fair picture of the greatness of these houses. With conservation only, there is a risk that the houses becomes just like museums without life or pulse and that people and the life of Georgetown, eventually will disappears. But at the same time, if you have a free hand to renovate anyhow you feel fits and without any guidelines, then the character and origin of the houses will entirely disappear. I think the ideal would be to renovate the buildings to what they once were, but at the same time make the houses available for businesses and lifestyles that we currently have in the modern society. Because even if it feels sad that it is usually money and capital gain that determines the shape of a city, you can not deny that the increased value of the houses and a more flexible use of them, increases the chance of the houses to remain in Georgetown for many centuries to come. An example of this in Sweden is the old town of Stockholm. This is an old neighborhood that has a history dating back to the 13th century. Today the houses in the old town are renovated in a very good condition and it is the part of Stockholm that attracts the most tourists. It is also an area where many people dream of living but that few people can actually afford. In the lower premises of the houses there are many restaurants, shops and cafes which give the town its pulse and makes it attractive for both Swedes and tourists. If these houses and premises would only be used as referred to the 13th century way of living and doing businesses, I believe the city would be pretty deserted today. I mean, no one wants to stay in the Old Town without toilets and running water and throw their feces down the streets as they did then. Nor do people who invest their heart and soul into the houses in Georgetown want to live without being able to wash their clothes in a washing machine.

Therefore, I believe that while it is vital to preserve the legacy of history in Georgetown, it is also important not to deny that times do change and accept the fact that not everything that is modern is bad, but perhaps simply, the very reason why history survives.

A different kind of breakfast

Lite trötta efter allt jul och nyårsfirande vaknade vi lite senare än vanligt idag. Vi var för trötta för att fixa frukosten själva och eftersom man i det här landet kan få tag på billig mat ute oavsett tid på dygnet = lyx, så köpte vi frukosten av en man som säljer nasi lemak här på gatan nedanför vår lägenhet. Men eftersom vi var lite sena så var all nasi lemak redan slutsåld så vi köpte en annan risrätt som vi aldrig tidigare provat ala east coast style. Gissa om vi blev förvånade när vi kom hem och öppnade paketet med ris som var, blått! Nytt år, nya smaker och definitivt nya färger på maten... 2014 kommer ju bli ett helt galet år som ni kan se!

A bit tired after all the Christmas and New Year celebrations, we woke up a little later than usual today. We were too tired to make breakfast ourselves and since you can buy cheap food at any time of day in this country = luxury, we bought breakfast from a man who sells nasi lemak here on the street below our apartment. But since we were a bit late the nasi lemak were already sold out so we bought another rice dish which we never tried before ala east coast style. Guess if we were surprised when we got home and opened the package with rice that was, blue! It's a new year, with new flavors and definitely new colors of the food ... 2014 will definitely be a crazy year as you can see!

By the way, the blue rice was absolutely amazing. East coast breakfast vs. West coast breakfast = 1-0.

Happy New Year!

Jag tog lite ledigt från bloggandet över jul och nyår då jag märkte att många av er läsare själva hade fullt upp med allt jul och nyårsfirande samt att jag själv behövde en paus. Jag tror starkt på att pausa det man håller på med emellanåt, särskilt vad gäller jobb, sysselsättning men även fritidsaktiviteter. Det finns en risk för annars att det kan ta överhand i ens liv och bli lite mer utav en besatthet snarare än vad det borde vara. Ett jobb är ju trots allt bara ett jobb, oavsett hur intressant det än är. Det är i alla fall min inställning. Och den bästa pausen i livet måste ju vara fikapausen, inte sant?

Idag fick vi information om att överskrivningen av marktiteln i vårt namn kommer att ske imorgon så det är bara att hoppas att det sker enligt planerna. Det har redan blivit försenat två gånger tidigare så jag tar det med en nypa salt men man kan ju alltid hoppas. När vårt namn äntligen finns på marktiteln så är husetköpet klart och förhoppningsvis innebär det att vi kan börja med renoveringen efter det kinesiska nyåret. Vi börjar bli väldigt förväntansfulla nu, jag och min man, och min man har redan börjat med 3D ritningarna för huset. Och jag kan lova att det ser mycket fint ut! 2014 kommer att bli ett mycket spännande och intressant år. God fortsättning till er alla!  




I took some time off from blogging over Christmas and New Year since I noticed that many of you readers were busy with all your Christmas and New Year celebrations and also because I needed a short break myself. I strongly believe that you sometimes need to pause whatever it is that you 're doing, particularly when it comes to work, but also recreational activities. There is a risk otherwise that it can take over your life and become a bit of an obsession rather than what it should be. A job is after all just a job, no matter how interesting it may be. Any way, that is what I believe. And the best break in life must surely be the coffee break, right?!

Today we received the information that the land title, that will be transferred to our name, will be done tomorrow so lets just hope that it will happen as planned. It has already been delayed twice so I for sure take it with a grain of salt, but one can always hope. When our name is finally on the land title, the house purchase is done and hopefully it means that we can start with our renovation after the Chinese New Year. We are getting very excited now, me and my husband, and my husband has already started with the 3D drawings for the house. And I can tell you that it looks very nice! 2014 will be a very exciting and interesting year for sure. Happy new year to you all!
