Fika

To have a break during the day and sit down with friends, family or colleagues and together enjoy some coffee (kaffe) and pastries (fikabröd), that is the meaning of the word fika. For Swedes, the fika breaks (fikapaus) are the most important part of the day and of the Swedish culture.

Eid al-Fitr, heavy rain and lots of reading

Ramadan is over and the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr is celebrated here in Malaysia. Yesterday, we could hear beautiful prayers from the Aceh mosque, which is right next to our house. Georgetown was full of people in their nicest clothes, heading to the mosques to pray. Islam, like Judaism and Christianity, is a Abrahamic religion and its prophets Moses, Jesus and Muhammad are all, according to myth, the descendants of the patriarch Abraham. I almost got into some Christmas spirit when I saw all the people dressed up, smiling on the way to the mosque to celebrate one of their most important festivals. It is often the case when you live abroad and see the people in that country celebrate their festivals, it reminds you of the holidays that you yourself have always celebrated since you were small. And since Christmas here is celebrated quite differently from Sweden, it almost felt as if Eid is more like Swedish Christmas than the actual Christmas here is.

A few years ago I was in Beijing celebrating Eid in The Niu Jie mosque with my friends. Now, some years later, I am here in Malaysia instead. It is an exciting and good feeling to not know where I will be located in a few years. Strangely, the feeling of not knowing gives me a sense of calm. I think some people are simply meant to constantly walk around on this earth without really getting rooted anywhere. I'm definitely a person like that. But until then, I'm just enjoying this moment of heavy rain here in Malaysia, to have a few days off from the renovation and just relax and devote myself to something that I love, which is reading books. Eid Mubarak to you all!

A day off without house renovation, workers in the house and a general mess. Wonderful! We take the opportunity to just relax and enjoy the house and the silence. A long breakfast out at a cafe, a bike ride in Georgetown and just time to take care of each other. Perhaps we will deal with this week's laundry that has been neglected because of renovation. Fortunately, we have such a nice laundry bag from Sweden which hides all the dirty laundry. Veckans Tvätt = The weekly laundry.

Plunge pool progress

This is how it looked like at the beginning of the renovation. Although we have a lot left to do, it's nice to see that so much has happened in this short time. Our little plunge pool that we are building was not much to cheer about at that time.

Men fortfarande långt ifrån klar.

But it's definitely progressing. Last week the pool was covered in its first layer of cement. But, as you can see, still far from complete.

This week, the plunge pool is beginning to take it's final shape and finally look like a real plunge pool. Now it's not long until we can take our first dip in our very own pool.

Pots and plants

Yesterday we were off to a nursery to buy some plants and pots to our house. There is an infinite variety of interesting plants and trees that you can buy here in Malaysia. Many of the plants, I recognize from our indoor plants in Sweden, with the major difference that here in the tropics they grow everywhere in the wild. Mango tree, Papaya tree, Rambutan tree and durian trees are other interesting and exotic plants that you can buy here at the nursery. A bit different from our apple- and pear trees we have in Sweden.

There were also unlimited pots to choose from. It's important to know what you want when you have such a large variety to choose from. I prefer when there are about three options to choose from. That's about all my brain can cope with in this heat. Luckily, I have a husband who likes to look around at all the options. He can walk around and look at things for a long time when we are out shopping. For me, I like to know what I want, walk in, quickly decide and then walk out. No fuzz and no indecisiveness. That's me. Wonder why no one never wants to go shopping with me? But, if you want a fika partner, then I'm your girl.

It felt like walking around in a jungle in this nursery, especially with all the coconut trees in the background.

Finally we came back home with some plants to plant. Jasmine, chilli, various leaf plants and a flower tree had to begin with.

And these absolute gorgeous pots that we found.

Butterfly windows

A beautiful detail on the many shophouse here in Georgetown is its window at the front of the house. There are a few different styles of the windows, depending on when the houses were built. Our house was built between 1840-1900 century and is called "Southern Chinese" eclectic style. You can read more about the different shophouse styles here in my previous post. Some houses, including our "Southern Chinese" Eclectic style, has small windows at the front that looks like butterflies and are therefore also called butterfly windows. Before the renovation, our windows at the front were painted in a light green color which made them disappear against the bright facade. Today, I painted one side of the house's windows dark gray, and immediately these beautiful windows became so much more prominent and central to the house. You also get the feeling that the windows are larger now with the darker color. We are far from done with them, but here is a sneak peak of our butterfly windows, with dark grey color on the left side and light green color on the right.

A much needed break

Renovating an old house can at times be very energy consuming and tiring. Although we do so much all the time, it's still so much left to do. We paint, we build, we decorate and we clean but still it feels like the house is not really complete. But, then of course, the entire surface of the house is about 240 square meters, so no wonder why it takes some time. In addition, basically everything in the house has been rebuilt from the ground so considering this, I'm actually quite surprised that we have come this far in such a short time. But as I mentioned earlier, it does takes the energy away from you sometimes and when that happens, it's important to allow yourself to take a break from it all, maybe have a breakdown, and then move on with some new energy. And what better way to regain some energy, than to take the bike and ride to the local bar and cool yourself off with a tropical drink? Warm evenings, a World Heritage city in Southeast Asia and a coconut drink with a pink umbrella, that is our energy boost for the moment.

A new home

Our fishes have a new home now. We bought this nice concrete pot today, thinking it would fit well as a fish pond in our courtyard. We placed the nice pond in the middle of courtyard so that we can enjoy it no matter where we are in the room. With the nice water plants and the higher flower in the middle, the small pond became a beautiful detail in the so far empty courtyard and the fishes seem to be quite happy in their new home.

Rambutan harvest

While it is harvesting time for apples in Sweden, it is harvesting time for rambutan fruit here in Malaysia. These beautiful bunch are from my in-law's garden. Thus, without any pesticides and absolutely delicious.

Så här ser rambutanfrukterna ut inuti. Konsistensen påminner mycket om lycheefrukt. Underbart läskande i den tropiska värmen.

This is how the rambutan fruit looks like on the inside. The texture of the fruit meat is very similar to the lychee fruit. Really refreshing in this tropical heat.

Living room sneak peek

We've barely had time to buy any furniture for our living room. Besides from a new sofa, most things are a collection of old renovation materials, flea market finds and other peoples' disposed objects in Georgetown. However, since the living room floor has beautiful tiles with patterns of earthy colors and the walls contain of the original old bricks, it doesn't really matter that much that the room is a bit spartan. That was more or less our concept from the beginning when we started the renovation, that the details and the materials used should be the highlights which gives the house its charm. And the more natural elements that are used in the house, the less furniture it takes to recreate the greatness of this shophouse.

A view from the back

Verkligen inspirerande!

We have a roof terrace at the back of the house that we are rebuilding as a combined roof terrace and bathroom. The most amazing part about living in a tropical country is that you can build a bathroom that is semi outdoors. In other words, having a rain shower without a roof over your head. Right now we are only half way with the renovation of our bathroom and we are having some difficulties deciding on how we want it. Some tiles, mosaics, concrete floor and a toilet are in place, but that's about it. We find it difficult to decide whether the bathroom should be completely indoor, or whether it should be left semi open. It's great to shower under open air, but at the same time it is also makes the bathroom more dirty. Anyway, on the other half of the roof terrace, we have decided to leave it open and enjoy the feeling of the open sky above. To prevent us from falling down from the terrace, we have built a wall of yellow concrete that is inspired by African architecture. So now we can be there and enjoy the view of the beautiful heritage shophouses in Georgetown, while deciding on what to do with our future bathroom. A view that provides quite the inspiration!

Living room floor

I just can not stop looking at our wonderful living room floor. It is a sheer delight to rest my eyes on something so beautiful. All the amazing details that are in this house are endless. Everything from old doors and windows to the wonderful brick walls, wooden floors and old wooden stairs. Not to mention the best part of all, our open courtyard in the middle of the house where the old granite stone practically sparkles after a tropical rainfall. There is not much that can be compared to sitting down with loved ones and drinking coffee at a beautiful courtyard in a rainy Malaysia.

The first coating

First coating of the facade is done. We chose a creamy white color for our facade. The idea is that the facade should feel fresh and light and give an airy feeling. In contrast to the bright facade, the windows will be painted graphite gray. To emphasize the details in the window frames and to get that true feeling of the old shophouse, a gold color will be added. For us, it is important to highlight the details that are so typical of these old houses, while at the same time creating a house that feels modern and contemporary. The materials and techniques that we use in the renovation is a mix between old and new. We want to use as much recycled material as well as old techniques as we possibly can, without sacrificing a good and sustainable living.

While I was painting the facade, my husband repainted an old mailbox that came with the house purchase. The mailbox was an ugly, plastic, red thing that we first wanted to throw away. Then, my husband got the idea that we could try to repaint the mailbox before throwing it. Good thing we did, because with a bit of black paint the mailbox fits just right in.

Fortune telling

Today, I plan to paint the facade of the house. I feel more refreshed than ever after yet another wonderfully and quiet night in the house. We sleep so incredibly well here and I can't help but to see it as a sign that we have bought the right house for us and our needs. A man came by outside the house the other day and started talking to my husband. He told my husband that this house will bring us great fortune and that it is important that we let the house take its time and that we shouldn't rush the process just because we want it done. Then the man went away. My husband thought the whole thing was a bit funny and wondered where the man came from. Later, it turned out that this man is a psychic, or in other words, a man who claims to be able to see things we other people can not see. Is the man right about our house? I guess, only time will tell. And until then, time for some painting in this tropical heat.

Spartan life

This is how we live now. Very spartan, without partition walls, doors or proper windows and with things everywhere. But it feels wonderful. Because it is entirely our own house and when we eventually get everything in place, it will probably be the most spectacular and interesting house we will ever live in. It is truly an adventure and a pleasure to be part of all this. And just like my friend told to me yesterday, 2014 will truly be a year to remember!

With UnderbaraClaras book as inspiration, I'm ready to take on the interior design of this house, and my Swedish café. Finally!

Fish pond

We've got pets. Small, small fishes who are now swimming in a bucket in our courtyard. We got them from a friend who is moving back to Sweden after living here for 3 years. They can not bring the fishes back to Sweden, of course, so now they have a new home here i the shophouse. So far, they seem to be happy and well in their new home. The bucket that they now swim in is only temporary and I plan to buy a nice urn for them to live in. But for now, they just have to get used to the feeling of swimming in what resembles a dark, Swedish lake.

Courtyard blogging

Men vem behöver sånt egentligen?!

Oh my, it has been very quiet here on the blog. We have had so much to do with the renovation, and relocating and cleaning so I haven't had time for anything else. But now we're here in our new shophouse, and it feels wonderful! We still have a lot more renovations to do on the house but it is at least livable. We have no doors to the bathrooms yet, no air-conditioners, the stove is not connected, and like a million other things that is not ready. But who needs that stuff anyway?! At least we have roof over our heads, which is not too bad at all. Well, except if you're in the courtyard, because then we actually don't have roof over our heads. Best of all is that this house is so incredibly quiet and cool at night so it weighs up everything else that we have not had time to get prepared yet. And I really can't complain about my new work place. Blogging in 30 degrees tropical heat, in my own, private open courtyard, right in the happening world heritage city of George Town, Malaysia. Well, not that bad actually if I think about!
