Fika

To have a break during the day and sit down with friends, family or colleagues and together enjoy some coffee (kaffe) and pastries (fikabröd), that is the meaning of the word fika. For Swedes, the fika breaks (fikapaus) are the most important part of the day and of the Swedish culture.

My dream bed

I've always wanted a really nice bed. You know, like one of those beds they only have at really luxury hotels in Marrakesh or Zanzibar. A bed that you're just dying to go to bed in. Before we moved into this house, we looked around for just such a bed but we didn't find anyone that we really liked. So instead, my husband decided to design a bed for us. It's a luxury to be married to an architect / designer! Designed by my husband and draped by me. This is the result.

The number 1 cure

There are a lot of beautiful places here in Penang to spend your weekend at. Penang Hill is a favorite for us, but since I'm not yet fully recovered, we went for a lunch at this wonderful place instead. After having spent some time in such a beautiful, warm and sunny place, I feel so much better again!

Dizziness and hospital visit

Min yrsel började gå över men kom lika snabbt tillbaka. Men valmöjligheten då, tänker kanske vissa?! Ja, just det.

My dizziness started to go away but came back just as quickly. I have been indoors for several days now just resting on the couch. Really boring! I'm not a person who likes being still too much. After all, I'm Swedish. Fortunately the dizziness have started to disappear again but for a while there, I was a bit worried. And so I decided to visit a specialist at a private hospital here in Penang. I can't exactly say that I'm more open to private hospitals now than before the visit. On the contrary. In Sweden, most of the healthcare is public it shall remain that way, in my opinion! When you get the experience of what it might be in countries like Malaysia, where much of health care is private, I really feel that is a development that I don't wish for to happen in Sweden. But what about your freedom to choose then, some of you may think?! Fair enough, today I got a choice from the doctor. You either undergo a CT scan or I don't do any tests on you at all! I must admit that I really in't feel as if I was given a choice, rather as an ultimatum. And so I tried to understand what this doctor just said because I was, after all, a bit dizzy in my head. Maybe I got it all wrong? I therefore presented some different theories to the doctor like: I just flew from Sweden while being sick, I might have benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, maybe I'm pregnant, there might be something else that is wrong with my ears or maybe I have a virus that affects the ears or the liquid in them. Then, the doctor responded, yes, might be this, but first you need to do a CT scan. I asked if it's not a bit easier to just do a blood test or check the ears first to rule out any more "simple" explanations. No, I won't do any tests unless you do a CT scan, the doctor replies. Yes, that's right. Did I forget to mention that a CT scanner costs a lot of money and that the only way for hospitals to get back the money is from patients who have to pay for a CT scan. Since I already feel so much better today, I kindly but firmly declined a CT scan and also to stay in the hospital overnight and get injections (which was also something that was offered to me for a nice figure of money). I have no idea what those injections contains but apparently the doctor could know with certainty that it was the right thing I needed, but when I asked about other medications that I can take myself, he could absolutely not prescribe me anything without a CT scan. So, after waiting for over two hours to see a specialist, I kindly had to go back home again without any medications or check-ups done and with the feeling of not being any wiser about my dizziness.

It's starting to feel really good to be back in Penang, now that the worst jet lag is finally over. No more dizziness or nausea, yay! I'm also slowly adapting to the tropical heat again and the fact that I don't have to put on sweaters and jackets in order to not be cold. But, even though it feels great to be back in Penang, I'm still missing my beautiful Sweden. Nothing beats the fresh air, the blue sky or the wonderful nature over there. What I especially will miss, now in the beginning, are all the gorgeous lakes that you'll see everywhere in Sweden. It is like medicine for the soul to wander along the water around all these beautiful, Swedish lakes. You will, for sure, understand what I mean when you see these photos.

Jet lag

Where did the time go? Suddenly, three weeks in Sweden are gone and I'm back in the house in Penang. It feels a bit surreal to be back and  I really miss Sweden, family and friends. Since I know it will be a while before I'm back, it feels a bit heavy to get into the daily life here in Penang. Also, I have been hit by the worst jet lag I've ever experienced. Feeling dizzy and weird and yesterday I couldn't even walk by myself without falling so my husband had to practically lead me everywhere. I feel, however, much better today after a good night's sleep. Although, it will take a few days to get into life here in Penang again, it feels in any case  wonderful to be back with my beloved husband again. Over the next few days, I will just take it easy and try to recover from jet lag and sleep deprivation. Eventually, it will be time to start all the fun planning for the opening of my cafe!

Blueberry pie

Underbart!

When you're in Sweden and feel like baking something, then what could be better than to make a blueberry pie?! Blueberry pie is among the best thing I know and reminds me so much of all my summers as a child in Sweden. Today, I made a blueberry pie for my niece and nephew who I will finally get to see tomorrow. I haven't seen them in a whole year and can't wait to finally see them again. This weekend awaits a big family reunion, my brother's wedding and lots of celebrations. The weather is absolutely beautiful, warm and sunny and the wedding will take place in Loka Brunn, which is a wonderful nature site here in the province of Värmland. As if that wasn't enough, today I finally get to see my dearest friend Jenny again. No doubt! I'm having an amazing time here in Sweden.

Interview

Today, I did an interviewed for the local newspaper. They wanted to do a story about my life in Malaysia, about Fika Penang and our house renovation. Great fun! It is very motivating that there is a great interest in what we do in Malaysia and it's always fun when the interest comes from your own hometown. It was a really nice interview and the story will be printed in the newspaper in the very near future. Looking forward to read it!

It's a bit quiet here on the blog now that I'm back home in Sweden. I'm so enjoying being back here  with my family and friends, and I want to take the opportunity to spend all my time with my loved ones during this short stay in Sweden. For those of you who live in Sweden, this blog post won't be too exciting but I wanted to show for all you readers who have never been to Sweden, how a typical Swedish living, could look like. All photos are taken from my hometown Kristinehamn.

Swedish houses are usually very colorful and they are often made out of wood, since Sweden has a lot of forest. The corners of the houses are usually painted in a different color than the color of the facade and most likely that color is white, as you can see on this grey house. The red house in the background has instead corners painted in a darker color than the facade.

Swedes like to plant a lot of flowers and bushes in their gardens. Swedes usually adore summer, nature, plants and flowers because we don't get to see any of that during our long and dark winters. Perhaps that is also the reason why Swedes like to paint their houses very colorful. It would be quite depressing if we didn't get to see any color during the long winter.

In contrary to houses in Malaysia, Swedish houses don't have high fences or walls around the houses. It is usually wide open for anyone to enter the garden. Safety is not that big of an issue in Sweden, as it is in Malaysia. It is common to have a very low wooden fence around the house, but those fences are purely for decoration, not for security reasons.

A very common housing neighbourhood in a small town like Kristinehamn. Pavement roads are always located at both sides of the streets in Sweden. Swedish people enjoy walking a lot.

Some houses are smaller than others. The living area of a house in Sweden is normally smaller than in Malaysia. Our apartments are also much smaller than the apartments in Malaysia. We also live with fewer people since parents and grandparents always live in their own houses.

And some houses are really small! This is a very cute play house for the kids.

The gardens in Sweden are usually very big and people love to grow a lot of fruit trees and vegetables in their gardens.

Right now is apple season in Sweden.

This is a big house that has a few apartments inside for rent. My sister and brother used to live here before.

This is another apartment building in Kristinehamn. Many of the buildings here are not higher than three storeys.

The old saying is that if the berries on this tree are many, the winter will be very cold with lots of snow. And this year the tree is full of berries! Rowan berries is the English name of these berries. We use these berries to make jam.

Swedes love to cycle and walk. You can find this sign almost everywhere around the town.
