Five foot way

Jag hittade ett blogginlägg som handlar om de speciella "verandorna" som shophousen här i Georgetown har. Dessa "verandor" eller gångvägar kallas five foot way och var vanliga inslag på husen som byggdes under kolonialtiden. Anledningen till att de kallas five foot way är för att djupet på dem är fem fot lång. De designades framförallt för att ge skydd från solen och regnet åt de som promenerade i staden. I found a nice blog post about Five foot way, the special "walk way" that you can find on the shophouses here in Georgetown. These "walkways" called Five foot way, were common features on houses that were built during the colonial era. The reason they are called Five foot way is because the depth of these walkways were always five feet long. They were designed primarily to provide protection from sun and rain for those who walked in the city. Så här ser vår Five foot way ut. Vi är inte klara med renoveringen av den än som ni kanske ser. Det som främst är kvar att göra är att ta bort det fula, röda cementgolvet och lägga dit nytt golvkakel.

This is our Five foot way. We're not done with the renovation of it yet, as you can see. The main thing left to do is to remove the ugly, red cement floor and lay new floor tiles.

Gångvägen mellan vårt och grannens hus har blockerats med en tegelmur av den förra ägaren. Traditionellt sett ska det inte vara några väggar emellan husens gångvägar, men efterom väggen redan var där har vi bestämt oss för att låta det vara så just nu.

The walkway in between our house and the neighbors house, has been blocked with a brick wall by the previous owner. Traditionally, it is not suppose to be like this but since the wall is already there, we decided to leave it for now.  

Även denna sida är blockerad, men med ett trästaket. Vi får se hur det i framtiden kommer att se ut. Vi vill gärna höra med grannarna först innan vi beslutar att ta ner något. Just nu bor det ingen i huset bredvid, så det får bli en senare diskussion.

Also this side is blocked, but with a wooden fence. We'll see what we will do about it in the future. We'd like to talk to the neighbors first before we decide to take anything down but at the moment, there‘s no one living in the house next door.
