Happy Chinese New Year!

Efter att nu ha ätit nyårsmiddag tillsammans med vår familj här i Penang, är jag nu så mätt att jag knappt kan stå upp. Det är mycket vanligt här i Malaysia att man äter Hot pot på nyårsafton vilket innebär att man tillsammans vid köksbordet lagar råvarorna i en stor gryta med kokande soppa. Fisk, skaldjur, bläckfisk, sallad, minimajs, köttbullar, och svamp är bara några utav de råvaror som vi åt i kvällens hot pot...mums!

Det är nu knappt 3 timmar kvar tills det kinesiska nyåret och även då det inte direkt är tradition att avlägga några nyårslöften inför det kinesiska nyåret tänkte jag ändå lägga ut en bild på ett citat jag hittade i ett kafe i Georgetown häromdagen. Många människor lever idag sina liv väldigt hektiskt och ofta i strävan efter att tjäna mer pengar. Kanske skulle vi alla må lite bättre och känna oss mer tillfreds med det vi har om vi ibland stannade upp och försökte leva efter mottot som på bilden nedan. Vad vet jag?! I vilket fall som helst, gott nytt kinesiskt nyår på er alla!     

We just had a big New Year dinner with our family here in Penang, and I'm so full that I can barely stand up. It is very common here in Malaysia to eat hot pot on New Year's Eve, which means that everyone cooks the ingredients together at the kitchen table in a large pot of boiling soup. Fish, prawns, cuttlefish , lettuce , baby corn, meatballs, and mushrooms are just some of ingredients we had in this New Year's Eve hot pot ... yummy!!

It is now less than 3 hours to go before the Chinese New Year is here and even though it's not exactly tradition to make New Year's resolutions before the Chinese New Year, I just wanted  to post a photo of a quote I found in a cafe in Georgetown the other day. Many people today live their lives so hectic and often with the purpose to earn more money. Maybe we should all feel a bit healthier and happier with what we have if we sometimes just paused our lives a bit and tried to live by this motto shown in the photo below. Who knows?! Anyway, Happy Chinese New Year to you all and hope you're having a great one no matter where you are!

Chinese New Year

Det är hektiska dagar här i Penang just nu. Det kinesiska nyåret närmar sig och firandet av det är stort här i Penang. Det kinesiska nyåret kallas även för vårfestivalen och symboliserar väntan på våren och årets blomning. Eftersom nyåret följer den kinesiska månkalendern, infaller nyåret i år den 31 januari och innebär en övergång från ormens år till hästens år. Det kinesiska nyåret har firats i över 4000 år och det finns många legender om varför och hur det har firats genom historien. Idag är det kinesiska nyåret framförallt en högtid som firar familjens sammankomst och hedrandet av förfäderna. Hur nyåret firas ser olika ut beroende på land, etnicitet och familj. Här i Penang är det vanligt att man dekorerar sina hem med många röda detaljer så som tyger, lyktor, körsbärsblommor och kinesiska tecken som oftast symboliserar välstånd och lycka. Familjer firar helst genom att återförenas på nyårsafton för en gemensam middag och fortsätter firandet på nyårsdagen med att träffa släkt och vänner. Röda paket med pengar är en vanlig förekomst och delas främst ut av de som är gifta till de som är ogifta. Eftersom jag och min man numera är gifta, är det vi som delar ut röda paket till de som är yngre än oss och som fortfarande är ogifta. Vid det kinesiska nyåret är det även vanligt att man som buddhist går till templet och tänder rökelse, framförallt om det nya året inte är så gynnsamt för det kinesiska stjärntecken som man är född i. Nästa år är mindre gynnsamt för de som är födda i hästens, råttans, kaninens och tuppens år. Lyckligtvis är jag född i hundens år och verkar ha ett bra år att se fram emot vilket jag kan behöva då jag ska starta mitt eget företag. Men det skadar ju inte att tända lite rökelse i templet ändå för att vara på den säkra sidan!    


It's been busy days here in Penang for the moment. The Chinese New Year is approaching and the celebration of the festival is big here in Penang. The Chinese New Year is also called Spring Festival and symbolizes the anticipation of spring and its' blossoming. As the New Year follows the Chinese lunar calendar, this years' New Year, falls on 31 of January and represents a shift from the year of the snake to the year of the horse. The Chinese New Year has been celebrated for more than 4000 years and there are many legends about why and how it has been celebrated throughout the history. Today, Chinese New Year is especially a festival that celebrates the family reunion and the honoring of the ancestors. How the Chinese New Year is celebrated varies depending on country, ethnicity , and family. Here in Penang as in many other places, it is customary to decorate the home with a lot of red decorations such as fabrics, lanterns, cherry flowers and Chinese characters that usually symbolizes prosperity and happiness. Families often celebrate the New Years Eve with a reunion dinner which follows with the celebration on New Year's Day by visiting relatives and friends. Red packets with money are a common thing and is given mainly by those who are married to those who are unmarried. Since my husband and I are now married , we will be giving red packets to those who are younger than us, an still unmarried. During Chinese New Year, it is also common for the Buddhists to go to the temple and light incense, especially if the coming New Year is not favorable to the Chinese zodiac sign that you were born in. Next year is less favorable for those born in the year of the horse, rat, rabbit and rooster. Fortunately, I was born in the year of the dog and I seem to have a good year to look forward to. Lucky me, since this coming year is the year when I will open up my own business. But I guess it doesn't hurt to light some incense in the temple anyway, just to be on the safe side I mean..

Swedish music

Sverige är ju ett otroligt rikt musikland med många internationellt kända musiker och producenter/låtskrivare. Ibland blir till och med jag förvånad när jag lyssnar på radion här i Malaysia och fastnar för någon ny låt, som i slutändan ofta visar sig antingen vara en svensk produktion eller en svensk artist. Lite stolt blir jag ju faktiskt över alla duktiga artister i Sverige som har en så ledande men även unik stil vad gäller konst och musik. Jag tror att för oss svenskar så är musik en sådan självklarhet och om man tänker efter så finns musiken verkligen överallt i det svenska samhället. Jag har nog till exempel aldrig varit i ett land där man har så mycket olika musikprogram på tv som i Sverige. Vi har även våra kommunala musikskolor där jag tror att de flesta barn någon gång provat på något instrument. Jag spelade själv piano i några år, vilket jag tyvärr slutade med när jag kom upp i tonåren och upptäckte att det fanns andra spännande saker i livet att ägna sig åt. Och har man inte spelat något instrument som yngre så kanske man har varit med och sjungit i en av de många körer som finns i varje stad i Sverige. Oavsett vilken relation man än har till musik så tror jag att de flesta av oss skulle vara eniga om att musik är något viktigt och betydelsefullt för oss människor. Därför kommer musiken vara en viktig del i mitt kafe och eftersom det är ett svensk kafe så kommer självklart all musik som spelas ha en svensk anknytning. Nedan har jag publicerat några länkar som handlar om svensk musik och oavsett var i världen ni bor, har ni kanske hört talas om några av de artister och låtar som nämns. De artister som spelas på radio i Malaysia just nu är framförallt Icona Pop, Avicii, Swedish House Maffia och Robyn. I mitt kafe kommer det bli många fler artister från olika genrer att upptäcka, även sådana som enbart sjunger på svenska såklart.

   
Sweden is an incredibly rich country in terms of music, with many internationally renowned musicians and producers / songwriters. Sometimes, even I'm amazed when I listen to the radio here in Malaysia and get hooked on a new song , which in the end often prove to be either a Swedish production or a song sang by a Swedish artist. I can't help but to be a bit proud of all the talented artists in Sweden that has such a leading but also unique style in terms of art and music. I think that music for us Swedes is such a matter of course and if you think about it, music truly exist everywhere in the Swedish society. For an example, I don't think I've ever been in a country where there are so many different music programs on television as in Sweden. We also have our local music schools where I think most children have tried an instrument or two. I myself, played the piano for a few years which I unfortunately stopped doing when I became a teenager and discovered that there were other exciting things in life to do than to play piano. And if you as a Swede haven't played any instrument, then maybe you 've been singing in one of the many choirs that exist in every city in Sweden. No matter your relationship with music, I think most of us would agree that music is something very important and significant for us humans. And because of this, the music will be an important part of my cafe here in Penang and since it is a Swedish cafe, all the music played will have some sort of Swedish connection. Below you can find some further links and info about Swedish music and no matter where in the world you live, you will probably have heard of or recognize some of the artists and songs mentioned in the links. The Swedish artists played on the radio in Malaysia right now is primarily Icona Pop, Avicii, Swedish House Mafia and Robyn. In my Cafè there will be many more artists from different genres to discover, and of course also those artists who only sings in Swedish.

Art is rubbish is art

I helgen var det premiär för en konstutställning  i Georgetown med titeln "art is rubbish is art". Utställningen är en soloutställning av konstnären Ernest Zacharevic från Litauen som blivit känd här i Penang genom sina väggmålningar (murals) i Georgetown. Han har hittills gjort sex väggmålningar i staden vilka alla blivit väldigt uppskattade av såväl turister som lokalbor. I fredags var det då dags för hans egna utställning, belägen i en övergiven Art Deco byggnad från 1940-talet, där han skapat konst genom att använda sig av "skräp". Där fanns till exempel oljemålningar som målats på gamla kaffesäckar, tavlor med motiv gjorda utav gamla häftstift samt målningar gjorda på gamla skåp och trädörrar. Utställningen var väldigt imponerande och den gamla Art Deco byggnaden passade perfekt som konsthall för utställningen. Väl värt ett besök om man befinner sig i Penang!


Last weekend was the opening of an art exhibition in Georgetown titled "Art is rubbish is art." The exhibition is a solo art exhibition by the artist Ernest Zacharevic from Lithuania who became famous here in Penang through his murals in Georgetown. He has made six murals in the city so far, and all of them has been very appreciated by both tourists and locals. Last Friday, it was time for his own exhibition located in an abandoned Art Deco building from the 1940s, where he has been creating art from old "rubbish". There were, for example, oil paintings painted on old coffee bags, paintings with prints made ​​out of old thumbtacks and paintings made on old cabinets and wooden doors. The exhibition was very impressive and the old Art Deco building is perfectly suited as an art gallery. This exhibition is well worth a visit if you are in Penang!

New bicycles

Nu har vi äntligen köpt egna cyklar och titta så fina de är! Idag har vi varit ute och cyklat runt Georgetown hela dagen i solen och värmen, så nu är vi helt slut. Vi tog dock massa sköna och lata pauser inklusive lunch på den indiska restaurangen Kapitan och en god illy kaffe på Muntri 47. Efter vår cykeltur åkte vi hem för att laga lite pasta men då tog gasen i spisen slut och vi hade ingen eld att laga mat på så det fick bli att åka till den lokala food courten och äta lite Tomyam fried rice och diverse goda nudelrätter. Med andra ord, en helt underbar söndag i Penang!        



We've finally bought our own bikes and look how nice they are! Today we've been out the whole day cycling around in Georgetown under the hot sun, so now we are completely exhausted. We did, however, enjoy a lot of nice and lazy breaks in between including lunch at the Indian restaurant Kapitan and a good illy coffee at Muntri 47. After our long bike ride in Georgetown, we went home to cook some pasta but then we ran out of gas in the stove and so we had to continue our lazy day with a visit to the local food court and eat some Tomyam fried rice and assorted good noodle dishes. In other words, a wonderful Penang Sunday!
