Fika

To have a break during the day and sit down with friends, family or colleagues and together enjoy some coffee (kaffe) and pastries (fikabröd), that is the meaning of the word fika. For Swedes, the fika breaks (fikapaus) are the most important part of the day and of the Swedish culture.

Today is Valborgsmässoafton (long word, I know. There's a lot of these long words in Swedish. My husband is equally amused and annoyed about them. Imagine us kids when we have to do the spelling tests in school, it's a nightmare!) Anyway, this very long word is the name of our Spring festival and it means that the long-awaited spring is here. Well, it's not really here in Malaysia but it is in Sweden. Malaysia only has one season: unbearably hot, 24 hours a day, all year round. Although, it's quite wonderful to have sunshine every day and not having to feel depressed or anxious because of darkness and cold weather, I do really miss the seasons sometimes. But for today, we can at least pretend that it feels like Valborgsmässoafton and that the Spring is here. Normally this day, we would go out with our family and friends and watch bonfires and fireworks and listen to choirs, singing songs about the arrival of Spring. Our celebration of this festival goes a long way back to the 600-century, and is a mixture of Pagan and Christian traditions. It was first celebrated to commemorate Saint Valborg. This day was also seen as being the day when life and death where closely linked together. The bonfires were meant to keep all the witches away according to the Pagan believes and as a way to burn the old and give way for the new according to Christianity. Today, we mostly celebrate it as a symbol of Spring and light. So, no matter Pagan or Christian believes, have a great Valborgsmässoafton everyone!

And yes, I almost forgot, it is also our Kings birthday today. So, happy birthday to King Carl XVI Gustav. May the force be with you!

Bright and airy living

Today, we have removed the partition walls on the second floor of the house, so now we can finally appreciate its space and future potential. Now the house really feels like a true shophouse inside. The previous owner had, through re-buildings and renovations, removed or "hidden" all the amazing details that are characteristic for these kind of houses. The courtyard is an example of this and another example is the beautiful wooden floor upstairs, that was hidden underneath the vinyl carpet. These old wooden floors are almost impossible to construct today since the boards that are sold today to restoring these old houses are thinner and of poorer quality. Bright and airy is what defines Swedish design, and since one of us is Swedish, then bright and airy it is! Below you can see the before and after pictures on the upper floor with and without interior walls.

Before the front part of the house upstairs looked like this.

Now, it looks like this. Bright and airy!

This is the before picture of the back of the house

And this is the same space minus most of the partition wall.
The wooden frames from the partition walls are all collected an will be
reused later during the renovation. GDI Design Workshop, who are doing all of our shophouse renovation is an Australian Green Star accredited professional company.
As little as possible will go to waste!

The courtyard - finding the granite stone

The demolition of the courtyard was done by removing all tiles and cement with a jack hammer. The problem was only that in the beginning, the workers didn't understand the difference between stone and cement. I don't know if this was because of inadequate language skills in Malay or if they actually could not distinguish between cement and stone. The guys who started with the demolition work are not from Malaysia and have perhaps never worked in this industry before. It is very common here in Malaysia that the labor for the more physically challenging jobs, come from places outside of Malaysia since there are fewer and fewer people from Malaysia who actually want to do these jobs. Anyway, we were a bit worried at the beginning that they would destroy the granite stone, if there were any will say. And so we decided to stay throughout this process to see what we would find underneath, and to make sure that no granite stone was destroyed.

Many layers of cement and tiles was found under the tiled floor that before the renovation, formed the house's floor. But then, finally, this beautiful granite stone was revealed under all those layers, just as we had hoped for. And in addition to the beautiful frame of granite around the courtyard , we also found that the floor of the courtyard was made by the same beautiful granite stone, and all of it in perfect condition. Since the courtyard is so special for us and for these houses, we were overjoyed to find these beautiful granite stones in our own courtyard. Such a good start for our renovation! The next thing for us to do is to demolish the ceiling boards downstairs to hopefully find the upstairs' wooden floor in a good condition without too much damages or any termites.

The courtyard

The best thing about these old shophouses, are the open courtyards. They are kind of like the heart of these houses. Thanks to the courtyard,  cool air from the outside can be circulated throughout the house and keep the house from being so unbearably hot. This without having to use air conditioning, which is, by the way, not so environmentally friendly. It is perhaps because of this reason, we felt that we wanted to start the renovation from this part of the house. The exciting thing about this part of the renovation is the pursuit of the stone, which hopefully remains somewhere beneath all the layers of tiles and cement. These courtyards are from the beginning framed with beautiful granite slabs. It is not certain that the stone after all these years remains because previous owners may have ruined it for redevelopment and covering of the courtyard.

The previous owner removed the courtyard by adding cement and tiles over it so that the level of the floor would be the same throughout the house. Before we began the demolition of the courtyard, it looked like this.

The before pictures

Here are the first pictures of our shophouse before the renovation. As you will see, there is quite an extensive renovation that we will do before the house is ready. It feels very exciting for us to do a project like this and to recreate the grandeur of such a historic, old house. We will do everything we can to make the house justice. But we will of course also give the house a touch of our own present history. The shophouse will after all be renovated by a married couple who both have their different cultural and historical backgrounds from Sweden, China and Malaysia. This will of course be shown for the future history. Not least in the form of a Swedish café.

This is the front of our house. The facade of the house has to be repaired and repainted. Windows and doors will also be painted in a color other than green. We have not decided exactly what color yet.

This is the first room in the house and the room that will eventually be turned into a Swedish café. There is much to do before then, but already I feel so very pleased with the room's potential. It will be perfect for a Swedish cafe! The plan was to redo the entire room from floor to ceiling, but because the floor is still intact and has a white color with some hints of brighter hues (much like a vinyl flooring) it will fit in well with the rest of the decor. I will therefore not have to spend the money on the floor and instead put that money to use on something else, plus it feels more environmentally friendly to be able to reuse some of the existing materials in the house.

These two images show the current kitchen. I do not understand how those who lived in this house before us has been able to live there so long with a kitchen like this? The kitchen will be fully renovated with new floors, walls, kitchen appliances, cabinets, fridge, freezer, etc.

This is also part of the existing kitchen and is currently the only toilet in the house. All this will be demolished and be a part of our kitchen later on. Here, we will put the fridge and freezer and make room for some storage. To the left, there is a small door to our backyard that we share with 3 other neighbors.

Och bakgården ser ut såhär.

And the backyard looks like this.

This is our open courtyard on the ground floor. Basically, it is simply a square hole made from the ground and all the way to the roof that is made for air to flow through the house and make it cooler. When it rains here in Malaysia, it will thus rain into our house. It is so hard to imagine this when you have not seen it with your own eyes. Right now it's not a real open courtyard because the previous owner covered it with a temporary roof. We will remove the roof because we want the effect of the cool air coming into the house.

This is how the open courtyard looks like on the second floor. We will replace these walls and windows.

This is the back of the house on the second floor and where our master bedroom will be. The wall that you can see in the middle of the house will be removed.

This photo is taken from the bedroom in the back of the house of the second floor and shows the middle part and the front of the house. All the partition walls in the middle will be removed. This space will later on be turned into an office area for my husband and a guestroom with toilet and bathroom.

Utsikten från övervåningen på framsidan av huset.

The view from the front of the second floor.

This is a terrace on the second floor which we will turn into a master bathroom.

This is what most of the walls look like in the house. All plaster will be torn down from the walls so that the bricks underneath will be exposed. In some places, the bricks will be retained and only covered with a thin layer of plaster, while others will be completely covered with new plaster.

Och renoveringen har äntligen börjat!

And the renovation has finally started!

The shophouse renovation begins

So we have now got the keys and the previous owner has emptied the house of all his things. It is finally time to start the renovation of our long awaited shophouse. Tomorrow, we will take lots of pictures of what the house looks like in today's condition, to later on be able to show you what kind of changes that we are doing during the renovation and also the differences between before and after the renovation. This is going to be super exciting and fun! Let the Shophouse renovation begin!

Easter is truly my favorite holiday. It is, just like my sister described it earlier this week, magical. Easter occurs when the spring arrives in Sweden after the long and dark winter. Only someone who has lived in a country that is as dark and cold as Sweden, can truly understand how wonderful everything feels when Easter and spring finally arrives and everything starts blossoming. Easter in Sweden is celebrated partly because of the Christian tradition, but also because of the old Swedish folk traditions. Easter celebration begins on Maundy Thursday in Sweden when witches, according to old Swedish folklore, flew to the Blue Mountain only to return on Easter Sunday. Because of this belief, the kids in Sweden dress out as witches and go around together among the houses in the neighborhood where they live to hand out Easter drawings that they drew. To thank the children for their drawings, they are given candy or other small gifts to take home. A bit like Halloween in the United States. During Easter Saturday, the family often gather to eat lots of Easter food and candy. We eat a lot of eggs at Easter in Sweden and the shells of the eggs are painted by the children before they are eaten up for Easter dinner. Other dishes that are eaten are herring, lamb, salmon, and is slightly similar to the Swedish Christmas food. The houses are usually decorated with Easter decorations such as small chickens, hens and roosters and twigs with feathers in them. Yellow is the color of Easter and curtains, tablecloths and other fabrics are replaced with yellow ones for Easter. The houses feels because of this very bright and cheerful during Easter, which is needed after the long and dark winter. During Easter, many people go to the church which arranges Easter sermons throughout the Easter weekend. During Good Friday, the atmosphere in the church is rather gloomy and dark to honor Jesus who died on the cross that day. During Easter Mass on Easter Sunday, the atmosphere however changes to merry and bright when Jesus on this day, resurrected from the dead. Many people in Sweden are today secular and has therefore no strong Christian faith, but despite this, many people do go to church during the Easter holidays.

Here in Penang I don't notice any particular Easter celebration. Those who are Christians go to church , but in addition to that it seems as if Easter go by rather quiet and unnoticed here. No decorations are seen on the streets or in the malls. Not at all like during Christmas here in Penang. But despite this, the Easter bunny seemed to have found his way over here after all. For we have received our long awaited keys to our new shophouse! Happy Easter to you all!

Easter eggs and missing keys

Easter is almost here, and we hope to get a very special Easter egg from the Easter Bunny this year. April 19, that's the date that the previous owner of our house has promised us that he will hand over the key to our house. But since this is Malaysia, you'll never know but I choose to have hope since it is Easter and all. We are so eager to get started with our renovation of the house. To finally enjoy the feeling of getting the key and open the door to our new house and our nearest future here in Malaysia. To realize all the dreams and ideas that my husband and I have talked about and worked for since May last year. So just keep your fingers crossed that it will happen, that we'll finally get our key and can celebrate Easter 2014 here in Penang as new owners of our shophouse. I mean, bigger miracles have happened during Easter before. I ask, in fact, only for a key, not to be resurrected from the dead ... Jesus!

Amazing Sydney

It's been a long writing break on the blog but now we're back from our Sydney trip and I'm ready to start blogging again. Sydney was absolutely fantastic! What a city, I 'm completely in love with that city and wish I've would have been able to stay there much longer. I must admit that it feels somewhat depressing to be back at this little island. Sydney offered so much energy and joy and absolutely fabulous outdoor environments that one can only dream about when living here in Malaysia. It is truly a city that I would recommend for a visit. Although, with a warning that you'll probably never want to leave the city once you're there! Here are some photos from this wonderful city.
