The best thing about these old shophouses, are the open courtyards. They are kind of like the heart of these houses. Thanks to the courtyard, cool air from the outside can be circulated throughout the house and keep the house from being so unbearably hot. This without having to use air conditioning, which is, by the way, not so environmentally friendly. It is perhaps because of this reason, we felt that we wanted to start the renovation from this part of the house. The exciting thing about this part of the renovation is the pursuit of the stone, which hopefully remains somewhere beneath all the layers of tiles and cement. These courtyards are from the beginning framed with beautiful granite slabs. It is not certain that the stone after all these years remains because previous owners may have ruined it for redevelopment and covering of the courtyard.
Den förra ägaren tog bort innergården genom att lägga cement och kakel över den så att nivån på golvet skulle vara lika genom hela huset. Innan vi började demoleringen av innergården såg den således ut så här.
The previous owner removed the courtyard by adding cement and tiles over it so that the level of the floor would be the same throughout the house. Before we began the demolition of the courtyard, it looked like this.
