Fika

To have a break during the day and sit down with friends, family or colleagues and together enjoy some coffee (kaffe) and pastries (fikabröd), that is the meaning of the word fika. For Swedes, the fika breaks (fikapaus) are the most important part of the day and of the Swedish culture.

Sankta Lucia

Today, 13 of December, is a special day in Sweden when we celebrate the Saint Lucia. Lucia is the only saint that we still celebrate in Sweden today and we usually do that by going to church and watch a procession that is headed by one girl wearing a crown of candles, while others in the procession hold only a single candle each and singing songs dedicated to Lucia. Since I live here in Penang, there is no celebration of the Saint Lucia in the church and so how to better spend the day here in Penang than with your Swedish friend Rebecca and her daughter Laetitia. On Lucia day we usually eat lussekatter, pepparkakor and drink julmust. And so this was exactly what was on the menu this morning. So nice with some Swedish traditions here in Malaysia! I also did some minor Christmas decorating at home with a small Christmas tree, lingonberry garland, advent candles and some homemade Christmas stars. Despite the 30 degree heat outside, we do have some Christmas spirit here in Penang.
