Fika

To have a break during the day and sit down with friends, family or colleagues and together enjoy some coffee (kaffe) and pastries (fikabröd), that is the meaning of the word fika. For Swedes, the fika breaks (fikapaus) are the most important part of the day and of the Swedish culture.

Sleepless in Penang

When you're traveling east you will always feel more affected by the jet lag than when you're traveling west. Yesterday we went to sleep around midnight and woke up again at two o'clock, that is two hours later, and was wide awake. Completely impossible to sleep, so what do you do? We figured that since we're awake and alert, and a little hungry too, we might as well go out and eat something. This is really the best thing about living in Asia, no matter the time of day, you can always find restaurants that are open. So, we drove toward Georgetown to find something that was open. My husband knew about a mamak restaurant that is always open so we decided to go there. Mamak means that it is an Indian-Muslim restaurant that is halal, in other words, it serves no pork. When we got to the restaurant and just about to go in, there's a man at the entrance who all of a sudden starts to puke. Affected by jet lag, lack of sleep, etc., we still went into the restaurant and sat down, but when we were about to order, reality caught up with us and we realized how dirty and disgusting this restaurant was so we left the place. Instead, we went to a place that we know for sure always is good, Kapitan. Kapitan is also a mamak restaurant with unbelievable good food. We drank milk tea and ate some rice and noodles before we went back home and slept. What an adventure .. hope we can sleep better tonight!
