Just nu pågår en ganska het och mycket lustig debatt här i Malaysia. Jag följer den med stort intresse eftersom den handlar om ett utav mina favoritämnen, nämligen religion. Som universitetsstuderande läste jag ett år religionsstudier på Karlstads universitet. Där behandlades världsreligionerna, bibelvetenskap, kristendomshistoria och livsåskådning. Nu när jag bor här i Malaysia, som är ett land med så många olika praktiserande religioner och traditioner, är jag extra glad över mina tidigare studier i detta intressanta ämne. Debatten som pågår började med Allah, eller rättare sagt om vem som har rätt att använda ordet Allah. Allah är det arabiska ordet för gud. Här i Malaysia använder muslimerna ordet Allah när de pratar om sin gud. Detta eftersom det inte verkar finnas något ord på malay för gud och eftersom arabiska är det språk som de flesta muslimer använder i sina böner, i koranen etc. Men, det är inte bara muslimer i Malaysia som använder sig utav ordet Allah när de pratar om sin gud, utan även kristna i Malaysia använder sig av ordet Allah. Ordet Allah är inte förutbestämt att enbart användas för muslimernas gud, utan är enbart det arabiska ordet för gud. Allah är således inte ett namn, utan ett ord.
I Malaysia har delar av regeringen dock fått för sig att bara muslimer kan använda ordet Allah, att Allah är namnet på muslimernas gud. Detta har bidragit till att domstolen (vilken är väldigt korrupt här i Malaysia och utnämnd utav statsministern själv) röstat igenom en ny lag som säger att kristna inte får använda sig utav ordet Allah i sina texter och mässor.
Detta kan liknas vid tex att man i Sverige enbart kan använda sig utav ordet gud i den kristna kyrkan. Men pratar man om gudar i andra religioner så måste man använda sig utav ett annat språk än svenska. Som ni förstår är det ju så dumt som det bara kan bli. Att den Malaysiska regeringen inte har något viktigare att disskutera än detta är ju bara det skrämmande.
Det mest intressanta gällande den här debatten är dock inte denna idiotiska lag som röstats igenom, inte heller det idiotiska i om vem som har rätt att använda ordet Allah, utan det mest intressanta är responsen som denna debatt har fått i andra muslimska länder. Dagligen har det publicerats nya artiklar från länder som Pakistan, Förenade arabemiraterna etc. om att de inte kan förstå hur Malaysia kan genomföra en lag som förbjuder kristna från att använda ordet Allah. Islamologer skriver om debatten som skrattretande och omodern med citat som "we are laughing at you" och "it is an embarrassment to a modern, constitutional, democratic and deeply Muslim state like Malaysia,". Vidare menar dessa länder att kristna har lika stor rätt att kalla gud Allah, som muslimerna har. Att det inte är något hot eller hädiskt mot islam om andra religioner använder ordet Allah. "This idea that not only should Christians not be able to use this word, but that using the word is somehow a threat to Islam... that Malaysian (Muslims) are so stupid if they hear a Christian use the word Allah, they will accidentally become Christians. I mean, the idiocy of that statement speaks for itself,"
Sverigedemokraterna (ett främlingsfientligt parti i Sverige) vill ofta framställa, framförallt muslimer och den muslimska världen, som omoderna och osympatiska samt oförenlig med den demokratiska moderna "västvärlden". En ideologi som vi sorgligt nog kan se växa fram i alltfler länder runtom i Europa. Jag tycker den här debatten visar på det motsatta. Det är den muslimska världen som tar debatten mot denna odemokratiska och omoderna lag som röstats igenom i Malaysia. Kanske är inte alla muslimer så barbariska och omoderna som Sverigedemokraterna påstår? Kanske är de mer demokratiska och moderna än vad människorna som tror och röstar på Sverigedemokraternas ideologi, någonsin kommer att bli. Men vad vet jag? Jag är bara en person som studerat islam och mellanösternkunskap och forskat om islam i Kina, som har åtskilliga muslimska vänner runtom i världen (som varken är barbariska eller omoderna) och som lever i ett land med islam som dominerande religion. Jag tror nog Sverigedemokraterna och de som röstar på dem vet mycket mer om islam och muslimerna än vad jag vet!

There's currently a quite hot and very amusing debate going on over here in Malaysia. I follow it with great interest since it's about one of my favorite topics, namely religion. As a university student I studied one year religious studies at Karlstad University. The studies included courses like world religions, biblical studies, Christian history and beliefs. Very interesting. Now that I live here in Malaysia, a country with so many practicing religions and traditions, I'm really glad about my previous studies in this interesting topic.
The debate that is going on right now began with Allah, or rather, who has the right to use the word Allah. Allah is the Arabic word for God. Here in Malaysia, Muslims use the word Allah when they talk about their God. This because there appears to be no word in the Malay language for God and because Arabic is the language that most Muslims use in their prayers, and in the Koran , etc. However , it is not only Muslims in Malaysia that uses the word Allah when they talk about their God, also Christians in Malaysia uses the word Allah. The word Allah is not destined to be used only for the Muslim God, but is merely the Arabic word for God. Allah is thus not a name of a God, but a word.
In Malaysia, parts of the government, however, got the idea that only Muslims can use the word Allah and that Allah thus, is the name of the Muslim God. This contributed to the court (which is very corrupt here in Malaysia and kind of appointed by the Prime Minister himself) passing a new law that says that Christians can not use the word Allah in their texts or masses.
Put in another context, this would mean for example that only Christians can use the Swedish word for God (gud) in Sweden and that when we talk about the gods of other religions, we have to use another language than Swedish. As you can understand, this is just ridiculous. Furthermore, doesn't the Malaysian government have more important things to deal with and to discuss than this?!
The most interesting thing regarding this debate, however, isn't this ridiculous law that just passed, nor is it the idiotic question of who is entitled to use the word Allah. The most interesting thing is the response that this debate has evoked in other Muslim countries. There has been new articles published daily from countries like Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, etc. about their inability to understand how Malaysia can implement a law banning Christians from using the word Allah. Islamic scholars writes about the debate as ridiculous and outdated with quotes like " we are laughing at you " and "it is an embarrassment to a modern , constitutional , democratic and deeply Muslim state like Malaysia ." Furthermore, they write that Christians have as much right to call God Allah, as Muslims do. That there is no threat to neither blasphemous against Islam if other religions use the word Allah. "This idea that not only should Christians not be able to use this word, but that using the word is somehow a threat to Islam... that Malaysian (Muslims) are so stupid if they hear a Christian use the word Allah, they will accidentally become Christians. The Sweden Democrats ( a xenophobic party in Sweden ) often likes to portrait, especially Muslims and the Muslim world, as outdated, unsympathetic and inconsistent with the democratic modern " western world " . An ideology which we sadly can see emerging in more and more countries across Europe. I think that this debate has demonstrated the opposite. It is the Muslim world that goes into the debate against this undemocratic and outdated law adopted in Malaysia. Maybe all Muslims are not as barbaric and outdated as the Sweden Democrats claim? Perhaps they are more democratic and modern than what the people who believe in and vote for an ideology as the Sweden Democrats has, will ever be. But what do I know ? I'm just a person who has studied Islam and Middle Eastern studies, who has done research on Islam in China, who has many Muslim friends around the world ( who are neither barbaric or outdated ) who has worked as an integration officer in Sweden and who, for the moment, live in a country with Islam as the dominant religion. I think the Sweden Democrats and those who vote for them knows much more about Islam and Muslims than I do!
