Fika

To have a break during the day and sit down with friends, family or colleagues and together enjoy some coffee (kaffe) and pastries (fikabröd), that is the meaning of the word fika. For Swedes, the fika breaks (fikapaus) are the most important part of the day and of the Swedish culture.

Malaysia and its flexible working hours

Here in Malaysia, everything is so much more flexible than in most parts of the world. If compared to Sweden, the difference of flexibility is so great it almost feels like the two countries are on different planets. This flexibility can be both good and bad. It is good because the schedule can always be rearranged and no one really gets upset if you need to change your arrangements or if you happen to be late. In Sweden you almost get yourself a heart attack everyday trying to rush for your appointments and to not be late.  Because being late in Sweden is almost a crime. But sometimes this flexibility becomes a bit too flexible here in Malaysia. For example when you want to be efficient and plan your day wisely but never get  your things done because people are so late or sometimes don't even show up. Or for example now when I'm waiting for my husband to finish a meeting at 10 o'clock in the evening. Who by the way has meetings at 10pm on a Saturday?! This can seriously only happen in Malaysia. Or have I just been working for a rigid Swedish council for too long?

I apologize that this post is only in English. I was writing it from my husbands phone and it doesn't have the Swedish letters.
