Butterfly windows

En vacker detalj på de många shophouse här i Georgetown är dess fönster på framsidan av huset. Det finns några olika stilar av fönster beroende på när husen byggdes. Vårt hus är byggt mellan 1840-1900 talet och kallas för "Southern Chinese" eclectic style. Mer om de olika shophouse-stilarna kan ni läsa om här i mitt tidigare inlägg. Vissa hus, inklusive vårt "Southern Chinese" eclectic style, har små fönster på framsidan som ser ut som fjärilar och som kallas just för butterfly windows. Innan renoveringen var färgen på fönstrena ljusgrön vilket gjorde att de försvann mot den ljusa fasaden. Idag har jag målat ena sidan av husets fönster mörkgrått, och genast så blev dessa vackra fönster så mycket mer framträdande och centrala för huset. Man får även känslan av att fönstrena är större med den mörkare färgen. Vi är långt ifrån klara med dem, men här kommer i alla fall en liten tjuvkik på våra butterfly windows.

A beautiful detail on the many shophouse here in Georgetown is its window at the front of the house. There are a few different styles of the windows, depending on when the houses were built. Our house was built between 1840-1900 century and is called "Southern Chinese" eclectic style. You can read more about the different shophouse styles here in my previous post. Some houses, including our "Southern Chinese" Eclectic style, has small windows at the front that looks like butterflies and are therefore also called butterfly windows. Before the renovation, our windows at the front were painted in a light green color which made them disappear against the bright facade. Today, I painted one side of the house's windows dark gray, and immediately these beautiful windows became so much more prominent and central to the house. You also get the feeling that the windows are larger now with the darker color. We are far from done with them, but here is a sneak peak of our butterfly windows, with dark grey color on the left side and light green color on the right.
